To guarantee your chances of getting an opportunity to study in a different country, you will have to show that you can communicate in English. One of the more common tests is the IELTS and TOEFL. Both of these are very much recognized at the universities, but how do you pick the right one for your international master’s applications?
The IELTS or International English Language Testing System is a test that encourages the use of hands on real English language and various aspects such as Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking are in the test. It is done in British English and tends to have more conversational and everyday aspects. The Speaking section is the only one which is in an interview style and wherein the interviewer and the interviewee talk face to face, which may be easier for certain students In a sense.
While, the pride for the most part of an American university’s cherished TOEFL Test of English as a Foreign Language is more exam based and is used more often by American universities. It is paperless covering the entire format of the test, including the speaking test, which is done on a tape instead of being conducted live. American English is applied in TOEFL and it includes reading passages that are quite long, and resemble textbook materials that one would find in a college.
When deciding between the two, consider your comfort with the test format, the type of English used, and the specific requirements of your chosen university. Some may prefer one test over the other, so double-check their criteria.
